Happy New Year! 2018 is off to a flying start already with some excellent releases, check out some of my faves...

SG LEWIS - Aura {Ft. J Warner}

So “Aura" is the first taste of this three-part album that SG Lewis is dropping in 2018 called Dusk, Dark, Dawn and it’s pretty much the soundtrack of a night out, right from pre drinks to home time. “Aura” perfectly encapsulates all those feelings before heading out - it’s exciting, it’s funky and heck, a little swaggy too. Think smooth baseline, jazzy keys and playful percussion. The perfect party starter!

WAFIA - Only Love

I vividly remember this being a standout track at Wafia’s headline show last October in Melbourne and was stoked to see it released as a single this month. It perfectly highlights Wafia’s progression as a songwriter, being able to communicate the cultural complexities of sexuality, specifically falling for someone of the same gender. Further to this, being able to deliver this story through such elegant production is a true testament to Wafia’s artistry. Gah, she’s just brilliant!

TOWKIO - Symphony {ft. Teddy Jackson}

Hey I’ll be honest, never really got around “Hot Shit” but I was totally sold on “Symphony”. With its bouncy production matched with playful lyricism, “Symphony” makes for a really fun listen from start to finish and I reckon it’s the best we’ve heard from this Chicago rapper.

KIAN - Too Far Gone {ft. Vince The Kid}

Say hi to Kian! He's the 15 year old sensation slaying that chorus on Baker Boy's "Cloud 9" and now we have a slick new single from the Castlemaine local. Teaming up with fellow teen Vince The Kid for some simple yet smoooooth RnB vibes that will take you back to the early 2000's, "Too Far Gone" is a hugely impressive and exciting introduction to both talents. The future of Australian music is in good hands, ya'll!

ALICE IVY - Chasing Stars {ft. Bertie Blackman}

It’s official. Alice Ivy is the queen of collabs and chilled bangers. The Melbourne whiz slays both in new offering “Chasing Stars”, pairing Bertie’s vocals with some warm synths and horns bursting throughout. Charming and consistent, I anticipate this song to be a real standout moment on Ivy’s upcoming debut record. And also, how bloody good is it to hear from Bertie again?!

KENDRICK LAMAR X SZA - All The Stars

I froth this team up so much! Lamar unleashing on those verses, SZA soaring on those chorus hooks. Taken from the Lamar-produced soundtrack for Black Panther, “All The Stars” is dramatic and defiant through it’s celestial synths and thumping percussion, but also highlights a very cool pop-crossover for SZA. She really shines on this.

EVES KARYDAS - Further Than The Planes Fly

Again, so stoked to see the return of this Brisbane gal who’s been working on her debut album in London. The second single under her new E.K moniker, “Further Than The Planes Fly” is a winding yet confidence piece of electro-pop and I think it’s super reflective of the kind of music that Karydas was destined to create. Fun, bold and carefree!

YUNGBLUD - YUNGBLUD {EP}

My fave musical discovery of 2017 has kicked off the new year with his self titled EP and I’m screaming forever. Featuring the angsty “King Charles”, the energetic “I Love You Will You Marry Me” and powerful new single “Polygraph Eyes”, YUNGBLUD is a genre bending collection of songs true in spirit and genuine in emotion. Now the next step is getting this lad back to Australia to punch this EP out in the flesh!

TONIGHT ALIVE - Disappear {ft. Lynn Gunn}

Can’t even tell you how stoked I am for this Sydney band, new album Underworld is such a triumphant return and they deserve every success. Pop-punk at its finest with crunching guitars and vocal harmonies to die for, current single “Disappear” makes for a perfect mid point between where Tonight Alive have been and where they are headed.

TROYE SIVAN - My My My!

I can’t believe it’s only January and we have already been gifted with a huge contender for song of the year! (That’s a lie of course I can believe it, it’s Troye Sivan!). “My My My!” is the first taste of the 22 year old’s second studio record and it’s his boldest work to date. A song of liberation, freedom and love, Sivan’s latest hit has a compelling 90’s influence but also laced with some futuristic pop moments. Suss the video below, it's steamy but v cool, making this the ultimate pop masterpiece.

YUNGBLUD is this months coverboy and Andrew Whitton is the snapper! Check out his work here.
