Sounds Of: October

Sounds Of: October

Firstly, where has the year gone?! Secondly, why u do dis to me, October?! SO many hot new releases, here's a few personal faves!

BANFF - RENEW

Grab some tissues, kids, ‘cos this one will really tug at the old heart strings. Inspired by his own self-doubt as an artist, “Renew” is the new single from Brisbane lad BANFF and it seriously leaves my chest feeling so heavy. I think what really triggers me is the lyrics (“Cause I’m not a fool for you” </3) and those stabs of sorrow with each piano key. Even though it's considered “ a love story with the art of writing songs”, this latest offering from BANFF is a super reflective and genuine piece of indie folk-pop that I somehow find myself really relating to.

YOUNG FRANCO - ABOUT THIS THING {FT. SCRUFIZZER}

Young Franco injects some UK grime into new release “About This Thing” and it is a huge V I B E. Featuring international MC Scrufizzer, “About This Thing” indicates a slightly different direction for the Brissy producer with this house beat full of bounce and bass, but it’s a real testament to YF’s ability of adapting his production to different vocal styles. WOOP WOOP WOOP!

ELIZA & THE DELUSIONALS - DEEP END

Another solid pop-rock number from this Brissy outfit who you’ll dig if you’re into Alex Lahey, Tired Lion or even Catfish and The Bottlemen. A tale of one sided devotion, “Deep End” throws you straight into a crunching soundscape of fuzzy riffs, soaring hooks and heartfelt lyrics that can be applied to any difficult relationship.

BAKER BOY - MARRYUNA {FT. YIRRMAL}

Even just typing the words Baker Boy brings a big smile to my face. Danzel has completely owned 2017 with his fierce and fresh take on Australian contemporary hip hop, incorporating Yolngu Matha language into his rhymes to represent his Arnhem Land family and conveying a message of pride and celebration of his community. Second single “Marryuna” means to dance with no shame, to freestyle for the sheer elation of dancing, and it is the perfect feel good anthem. This guy radiates such great energy and I cannot wait to hear more.

LO’99 - FROM THE START {FT. ELIZABETH ROSE}

An infectious club jam that will tickle the fancy of any Disclosure or Gorgon City fans, “From The Start” is a real step up for Sydney producer LO’99 who is typically known for his darker dance pieces. Featuring the smooth vocals of Elizabeth Rose, “From The Start” wastes no time in launching a groovy bassline and sparkling synths, making for some srs boppin’ from start to finish. A tasty and tidy lil party tune.

MORNINGMAXWELL - TRYNA CHILL {FT. BLUEY MOON}

So October was a strong month for banging’ lil house jams, and Max outta Melbourne is bringing you quite the vibe here. A pretty loose dude who can lay down a hectic DJ set, I was anticipating this new song to be a real wild time but it’s way more chill and slick than expected and I love it! A clean yet commanding arrangement of beats and vocal loops, you simply cannot deny your body of this groove! Really impressed.

ANGIE MCMAHON - SLOW MOVER

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of this single since catching Angie at Bigsound in September and hoo boy, she has not disappointed. The guitar tone is raw yet compelling and Angie’s vocal has a real heart and bite to it. There’s swagger, there’s maturity and charm. Basically, there’s hardly anything to fault! One of 2017’s most impressive debuts, without a doubt.

MAZY - HELIAR

So this is a new trio out of Sydney, and if you vibe Tame Impala, Neon Indian or even MGMT, I think you’ll be on board. A swirling blend of psych-pop, “Heliar” is Mazy’s debut single and vocally I cannot help but liken to a cross between Kevin Parker and Mark Foster. A huge summer vibe.

WOODES - DOTS

If there was one song to describe the year that Woodes has had thus far, it would absolutely be this. Conquering and triumphant, “Dots” is a defining single for the Melbourne artist who penned this track on her first overseas writing trip. Through pounding drums and her soaring vocals, Woodes has captured a cinematic soundscape that will instantly transport you on an epic quest over oceans, mountains, snow and valleys. It’s a gorgeous thing to visualise and equally impressive to encapsulate sonically.

PNAU - GO BANG

PNAU are absolutely storming into album number five with new single “Go Bang”, a euphoric dance jam that sees the return of Chameleon vocalist Kira Divine. It’s intense, vibrant and sure as hell bangs - I’m SO ready for the record!
